Thinking of Castiel living in 2014 while Dean died just makes me think that there must have been a time once when it was just Dean and Cas alone. And they talked about what they’d do once they won, once they defeated Lucifer. And Dean promised that things would get better, that he’d get better and him and Cas would have a life together, a good one. With a house and a yard and maybe some mangy dog that followed Dean home one day and never left. But then they’d laugh and pretend it was just a joke, a pipe dream that would never really happen because can anyone really imagine a fallen angel and a broken hunter going all domestic? But there’s a silence afterward and both of them almost want to believe it could really happen so they secretly hold on to it. Except then Dean dies and Cas doesn’t and the dream really is just a joke to be laughed at.
